Winning a chess game in four moves is a rare feat, but it is possible with a well-planned strategy and a bit of luck. There are a few different openings that can lead to a four-move checkmate, but the most common is the “Fool’s Mate.” The Fool’s Mate occurs when White plays 1. f3, 2. g4, 3. h4, and 4. g5, and Black responds with 1… e6, 2… d5, 3… exf4, and 4… Qh4#. This checkmate is often seen in beginner games, as it is easy to fall into the trap of moving the pawns forward without developing the pieces.
While the Fool’s Mate is the most common four-move checkmate, there are a few others that are also possible. One example is the “Lgal Mate,” which occurs when White plays 1. e4, 2. Qh5, 3. Bc4, and 4. Qxf7#, and Black responds with 1… e5, 2… Nc6, 3… Nf6, and 4… Kf7. Another example is the “Boden Mate,” which occurs when White plays 1. e4, 2. Bc4, 3. Qh5, and 4. Bxf7#, and Black responds with 1… e5, 2… Nc6, 3… Nf6, and 4… Kf7.
